Zena Blackwell - Saving Snowman

£5,500.00

Oil on canvas
127 x 122 cm
2026

My paintings sit at the intersection of memory and parenthood, drawing on my own childhood alongside my two children's, and the shifting dynamics of our family as they grow. Each painting becomes a fusion of recollections: my own sharpest childhood memories overlaid with theirs. The ones that resurface most vividly tend to be family outings and holidays - fleeting, ordinary moments that carry outsized weight in how we come to understand ourselves. Underneath this runs a current of parental anxiety - climate change, screen time, the wider state of the world - rarely stated outright. Rising water appears again and again, often rendered in an almost childlike fashion - closer to a child's drawing of a wave than a depiction of a flood itself. This comes from a wish to shield children from certain truths without denying them altogether.
