Tamara Dubnyckyj - My vintage shirts

£1,850.00

Oil on canvas
51 x 41 cm
2026

These paintings are part of an ongoing series exploring the drapery of garments, and the power of clothing to define a mood, relate to culture, or act formally within the pictorial space. The garments are carefully collected, some lovingly worn - sought out and placed for their attributes and qualities, namely colour, texture or pattern. The characteristics of the garments emerge during the process of painting, where the handling of paint is used to create movement, tempo, depth, and sometimes a suggestion or trace of the body. The paintings are made up of quick initial marks with thinned oil paint, and then gradually embellished with further layers, until they feel finished, but also where some brush strokes still feel fresh. Colours are mixed on the palette and applied progressively to build up balance compositionally and formally, and so that their purity is apparent on the surface.
