Steph Smith - Night Fountain

£450.00

Oil on board
23 x 30 cm
2026

Steph's paintings capture the magic in the mundane and the extraordinary in the ephemeral - blossom or snow floating on the air, curious weather conditions, the ethereal light cast by street lamps or moonlight on water, that fleeting moment before nightfall when light transforms a landscape with strange otherworldliness. Her work celebrates the natural world's constant flux. Process is important. Steph works from drawings, photographs and memory rather than en plein air. Her initial training as a ceramicist, before studying painting, continues to influence her practice - her instinct for glazes and layered translucency is exploited in her use of oil paint. The paint is applied in varying consistencies from thin washes to thicker impasto, scraping back and reapplying until the desired mood emerges. The resulting works are rooted in feeling rather than depiction - each painting an emotional response to a landscape, not a record of it
