Simon Averill - Entanglement (A Space of Possibilities)

£2,400.00

Acrylic paint on wood panel
40 x 40 cm
2025

Clouds of Possibility. ‘At the smallest scale, everything is made out of a cloud of quantum possibilities’. (Tom Rivlin) The term ‘Clouds of Possibility’ captures how particles exist in multiple simultaneous states until observed, but the idea also works as a lens to view my painting practice. My paintings explore the intersection between art and science and I draw upon the concepts and the vocabulary of quantum physics. Probability, possibility, uncertainty, superposition, entanglement, particle-wave duality and action at a distance suggest ways to proceed with a painting. When I begin a painting there is always dynamic uncertainty; I’m presented with a cloud of possibilities. What follows is a series of tasks or thought experiments enacted in paint. Each brushstroke creates new relationships and possibilities within the painting, as well as between paintings. These paintings are intended to converse with their neighbour, to be entangled, to interact at a distance.
