Paintings in this series called ‘Protection’ are of small opalite objects. They are an attempt to look closely at objects and consider what they mean to us and why these small objects might offer us comfort.
These animal figures fit into your hand and they are tactile, smooth, and cool to touch. They have been created and sold to protect and heal. Their colours change under different lights and they seem to glow from within. Intensity of their colours is dependent on their surroundings and the source of light.
Vividness of their colours contrasts with companion shadows they have created. This figure of a pink rabbit has been painted with transparent layers of acrylic paint to almost carve the figure out.
The animals are confined indoors, and they are looking away from us, towards the light. They seem to be keeping guard, perhaps protecting us, in our home.
