I am originally from the Netherlands, where I studied at AKV St. Joost in Den Bosch, but I always felt drawn to learning the skills needed to produce figurative art. I trained at the Angel Academy in Florence and the London Atelier of Representational Art.
My practice is rooted in observation. I mostly paint from life, finding the interest in ordinary things. I am drawn to those. The challenge is always the same; to look hard enough that something unremarkable becomes worth looking at.
A fellow artist once told me: 'A good artist can paint something interesting; a great artist can make anything look interesting.' That really stuck with me and I think it partially explains my interest in this subject matter. It is a real privilege to spend time looking at something you would normally pass by.
