Growing up between America and Poland has given me a sense of multiple times and spaces coexisting and has shaped my fascination with memory, perception and architecture.
This series of 100 photographs depicts the interior of my grandmother’s house in Poland which I visited in childhood in the 80s. The Marcel Proust-inspired photographs in this series explore melancholy at the transience of things, longing for a way of being and an ever-shifting memory. They also serve as a certain document of a way of life in communist Poland, where time was less a commodity and making-do was the norm.
Whilst taking each photograph, I held variously-coloured paper viewfinders to the lens, to create the effect of looking through a keyhole and highlighting details of the interior. Constantly moving through the house, I crawled under tables and searched out countless childhood viewpoints of long-forgotten cupboard handles or hand-sewn curtains.
