Oil on primed paper
132 x 103 cm
2020

My large oil paintings on paper are made quickly and expressively. I am interested in capturing a glimpse of a moment rather than constructing a complete narrative. The nightclub painting began with a photograph, which I reinterpreted through paint. One woman looks down while another observes her creating an ambiguous exchange of gazes. In another painting, two women are caught in conversation; I was particularly drawn to the blonde woman’s vivid pink coat. Elsewhere, two women look directly out at us, aware of being seen and conscious of their poses. I am fascinated by women’s fashion across time, from Tudor portraiture to Paris Hilton, and by the ways women present themselves and are seen. Clothing, pose and gesture become markers of identity and performance. Through these paintings, I want to capture fleeting moments and preserve a sense of time, presence and possibility.
