I am not interested simply in making paintings, I am interested in painting; in the process of painting, in its formal and material qualities. I paint instinctively, with gestures, shapes and forms responding to one another in an ongoing conversation. Whilst the paintings may appear ostensibly abstract I don't necessarily see them in this way. I am inspired by cartoon language, comic books, children's book illustrations and the history of painting and whilst I do not directly reference these I am conscious of their influence on my work. Increasingly characters are appearing in the paintings, found through the act of painting. I paint fast, in that the act of painting is rapid, but the gestation of a painting is slow, with paintings taking many months, and sometimes years, to reach a conclusion.
