Harriet Mena Hill - Cornerstone : The Aylesbury Fragments

£3,000.00

Acrylic on salvaged demolition concrete
27 x 14 cm
2026

'The Aylesbury Fragments' series considers collective memory through the materials used in the construction of the Aylesbury Estate in South East London. The concrete substrate used in these paintings is salvaged from the demolition site. I have been working with residents on the Aylesbury since 2018 as the entire estate is demolished in a phased regeneration. Many of the participants in the community workshops grew up in streets which were demolished to make way for the Aylesbury Estate. It is here that they were subsequently homed. 52 years later having outlived the Utopian housing project they have been rehomed in new dwellings within the footprint of their original homes. Their memories form a living bridge which spans the lifetime of the estate. The concrete fragments embody this history.
