Abandoned industrial sites and traces of military ruins are recurring themes in my work. 'Abandoned steelworks' and 'Blast furnace: all that remains' result from visits to the site of the Redcar steelworks in the north-east - the area I grew up in. At that time, the works were dominant and a major source of employment. Then global oversupply of steel and cheap imports forced the closure, in 2015, of what was the second largest steelworks in Europe. The site has now been demolished to make way for the Tees Regeneration project. All that remains is the base of the blast furnace and which, when I recently visited, sits isolated in a wilderness awaiting its fate.
