These works examine some of the dynamics that can take place during queer sex. They operate at the fluid and often breached boundaries between mind and body, conscious and unconscious impulses of desire, and between fantasy and fact. They draw on a range of sources, including memory, projected fantasy and cultural references, for example in two of the paintings selected here, works by Caravaggio. By drawing in this way on multiple sources simultaneously, and through the physical aspect of their making, in their use of improvisation, erasure, violence, aggression, hot and cold colour, raw and tentative gestural strategies as well as ones of tenderness and slippage, the paintings re-enact the emotions and unspoken dialogues that are running through the encounters that they depict.
