Oil, charcoal and conte on canvas
30 x 25 cm
2026
In my current body of work I have been thinking on how we read the landscape: the rural rather than the urban. Why is the land parcelled up into fields of varying sizes for crops, grazing and much else?
Television programmes, holiday tour companies and painters have waxed lyrical about this bucolic landscape of a patchwork quilt of shape and colour. But with the result of the Enclosure Acts (1750 – 1820) vast numbers of the rural poor moved from the land into the cities.
Marking Out the Boundaries questions the notion of property, of borders, of common rights.
