My paintings are invariably concerned with ‘story’. I’m interested in the ways stories form in contemporary culture; in the resonances that surface between traditional story-telling and the populist tropes of present day politics. I draw on multiple sources ranging from film to folklore, but rely extensively on pareidolic* procedures (*pareidolia — the cognitive propensity to discern form in chaotic experience). My fostering of random and accidental ‘events’ in the paint surface stands as a conceptual parallel to the manner in which stories originate — whether to determine the news agenda or promote conspiracy theories — from incomplete information, from ‘facts’ that are disconnected or questionable. Ultimately the stories that occur in my paintings are my own attempt to give metaphorical form to events beyond my control yet shaping my daily existence.
