My paintings are only what's going on in my head while I'm in the studio. Painting is the only two-dimensional art form where the artist and the viewer see the surface from the same point of view, at all stages in its making. It is just that skin. The artist herself can’t see the work she’s done before, only remember it, and remembering is a very mutable thing. I am always fascinated by painting, by what it says, by how you can say it, by everything about it. I have a rule that says that if I think of something while in the process of painting, I have to do it. Even if, or maybe especially if, it’s a stupid idea. For example, ‘oh Charles, look, it could be a centaur’. ‘A centaur? Don’t be stupid. Who paints centaurs?’ ‘Go on then’. ‘Oh, shit...’
