Plants can provide food, medicine, shelter and soft colours in the form of natural dyes that are relaxing and calm. With so many threats to our natural world, natural plant dye connects us back to the earth. One reading of the myth of Persephone is that by explaining the natural cycle of the seasons, it gives hope for the future.
Using the Japanese dyeing technique of shibori, I use the random patterns to guide where I stitch and the embroidery becomes a meditation. In Japan, colours are said to embody the spirit of the plant they came from and medicinal benefits are transferred to the cloth.
This work tries to convey the fragility and vulnerability of nature. Using sustainable plant papers and natural dyes, embroidery is used to create wall hung paper sculptures that suggest protection by draping and wrapping the body.
